Reading Museum and The Museum of English Rural Life have developed ‘Museums, My Way’, a series of free sessions for neurodivergent visitors of all ages. These sessions, developed with Autism Berkshire, provide a safe environment to explore both museums.
Reading Museum is offering a weekly break-out space every Saturday, 10am - 5pm, aimed at neurodivergent visitors and their families. An area with tents, cushions and sensory toys will be available. Families can enjoy exploring the galleries using our sensory bags, then take time out to relax before continuing their visit. Siblings, families, carers and friends are all welcome.
These sessions include:
- sensory backpacks with ear defenders
- break out space
- self-led activities
- visual story and sensory map
All activities are optional and you can visit at any point during our opening times, every Saturday 10am - 5pm.
We would love to hear your feedback! Please leave your comments with a member of the team during your visit or fill in our online survey.
Check our What's On Page for the next planned session at Reading Museum or visit the MERL's website to book on one of their sessions.
Download a copy of our sensory map, and visual story below to help you prepare for your visit. Our sensory backpacks are also available for you to use during your visit, please ask a member of staff when you arrive.
The Museum galleries are also general quieter after 2.30pm on weekdays (outside school holidays).
'Museums, My Way' is part of Museums Partnership Reading, a collaborative, wide ranging programme of activities from Reading Museum and The Museum of English Rural Life, supported by the Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisation programme.
