Windrush Day

On the 22nd June 1948, the Empire Windrush arrived at the Port of Tilbury. On Windrush Day, we remember the five hundred passengers who stepped off as the first of the Windrush Generation, who travelled from the Caribbean to work and settle in the UK between 1948 and 1971.

National Windrush Day marks the anniversary of this arrival, and reflects upon the enduring contribution of the Windrush generation and their descendants to the social, cultural, and economic life of the UK.

On these pages, discover our Windrush resources and activities at Reading Museum created in 2020 and 2021.

Reading Museum's Windrush Day was created in partnership with Barbados Museum and Historical Society, Reading's Caribbean Association Group and the Alliance for Racial Cohesion and Equality, and with the generous support of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
