Venue: Reading Museum
What: Illuminated Manuscripts Talk and Demonstration
Join us for a talk and demonstration with Anne Lawrence and Barbara Jupe. Learn how manuscripts were made, from the animal skins treated to become parchment to different pigments of ink and paints that decorated pages.
This workshop will begin with a discussion of images and initials from medieval manuscripts which belonged to Reading Abbey. Samples of vellum, parchment, quill pens and pigments will be available for examination and comparison.
The second part of the workshop will be led by a practising scribe-illuminator, who will bring samples of her work in the styles of Reading, Winchester, and other medieval scriptoria. Demonstrations of the techniques involved will be given, and participants will be invited to design and decorate their own illuminated initials.
