Garden Party and Prison Cell - Oscar Wilde in Reading
Before his notorious imprisonment in Reading Gaol, Oscar Wilde was no stranger to the town. He attended garden parties at the homes of Reading’s wealthy gentry. Hear Professor Peter Stoneley discuss Wilde’s relationship – the happy and the tragic - with Reading, in a talk that draws on rare images and documents.
This talk is part of the Reading Abbey lecture series. Reading Gaol takes up the eastern end of the Abbey Quarter and its construction led to the further destruction of the eastern ruins. As part of the Reading Abbey Revealed project we want to share the entire history of the site, from the medieval to the modern.
