Windrush Day 2021

On the 22nd June 1948, the Empire Windrush arrived at the Port of Tilbury. The ship's five hundred passengers, traveling from across the Caribbean, represent the first members of the Windrush Generation, who came to the UK to settle and work from 1948 to 1972.

On National Windrush Day, we commemorate and celebrate the anniversary of this arrival and the enduring contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants to the UK’s cultural, social, and economic life.

Below, discover how we commemorated Windrush Day 2021 at Reading Museum. Learn about our live Windrush Day broadcast and poetry competition, and listen to members of the Windrush Generation in Reading explain the importance that religion has played in the lives.

Reading Museum's Windrush Day 2021 events are in partnership with Barbados Museum and Historical Society, Reading's Caribbean Association Group and the Alliance for Racial Cohesion and Equality, and with the generous support of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
